I’m an avid reader of books on preaching and “Deep Preaching: Creating Sermons That Go Beyond The Superficial” is one that I reference regularly. Because I believe it could help you in your preaching, I’m giving (up to) 5 copies away free!
Dr. J. Kent Edwards is a good friend, a former boss, and is currently the Director of the Doctor of Ministry program at Talbot Seminary as well as Professor of Preaching and Leadership. His love for the church and his reverence of Holy Scripture is found throughout “Deep Preaching”.
One of the strengths of “Deep Preaching” is that the methods described could easily be applied to more than just those who preach. It is an excellent resource for those who wish to study the Bible for personal application. I’ve used the 5 areas of developing a message and shared them in messages to help people gain an understanding of studying Scripture. I’ve taught them to new believers and in discipleship classes. I believe this book will help you become the student and preacher of Scripture that you want to be.
The areas of Deep Preaching that I’ve found most helpful are:
- An explanation of why preaching doesn’t have to be shallow.
- 5 areas to think about any Biblical text: the original audience, God, yourself, and your listeners by response (those who respond obediently to the text’s main idea and those who do not respond obediently.)
- Using powerful metaphors to help the main idea intersect into the lives of your listeners.
- A deeper respect for the Scripture you are studying.
Want to snag a copy? (I’m going to borrow Michael Hyatt‘s method for giving away free stuff.) Here’s are two ways to do it:
Option 1: Leave a comment on this thread below. Just leaving a comment will suffice, but I’d also be interested in knowing why you’d like this book! (Leaving a “why” will not increase your chances, I’m simply interested).
That’s it! (You can choose both methods and while that is much appreciated, doing both will not increase your chances of winning.) I’ll choose the winners next Sunday night (Jan. 23).
